Firdaus Omar Sheikh

I am seeking this award because my journey represents more than building a business, it represents breaking barriers while staying true to who I am.
As a young Muslim woman from Mombasa, I grew up in an environment where women can sometimes be made to feel that certain dreams are beyond their reach. There are expectations, boundaries and responsibilities that can make entrepreneurship challenging. But I chose not to see these as limitations. With faith in Allah, determination and a belief in my abilities, I started Sunshine Distributor from home and turned a simple creative idea into a growing business.
Today, I create locally made home décor, candles and marine-inspired replicas while creating employment and opportunities for others. My replicas are especially meaningful because they allow people to appreciate the beauty of our oceans without contributing to the destruction of marine life.
I have built this journey while balancing faith, family, culture and entrepreneurship. I want other young women to see that they do not have to abandon their values to pursue their dreams. They can build, lead, employ, innovate and make an impact while remaining grounded in who they are.
This award would not just recognize what I have achieved; it would give a powerful voice to the woman I represent — a young Kenyan woman who dared to start, persevered through challenges and continues to build despite the boundaries society may place around her.
I want to use this recognition as a bigger platform to create more opportunities for women and youth, grow Kenyan-made products into regional and international markets, and inspire the next generation to believe that their circumstances do not have to define their future.

I did not wait for the world to make space for me. I created my own space - with faith, courage and purpose.
